I have stayed in hotels in Europe for the last 80 years, leaving out of course, the years of WWII. For the first part, I travelled with my parents; then I wove various trips around research journeys while I was a professor of Austrian history. Later, after retirement, I was pursuing a hobby horse, namely trying to see as many Romanesque churches as I could.

I recall very many good hotels and some that were awful. I thought, at this point in my life, it might be useful to share some of my positive experiences. What I propose to do is to review hotels in such a way that my readers might construct an itinerary along my reviews. Thus, there will be segments which reproduce a plausible route within a European country.

I intend to include some of the delightful small hotels I have been to as well as some larger ones. But I will not write about the palaces which at one time were, considering the fluctuations of the American dollar, eminently affordable but which are now totally out of sight. If your means are such that you can afford them, you don't need my advice.
